Start with the question you want answered

You may already have a treating team and still want help preparing for a conversation. Perhaps you have several reports to organize, want to understand why an option was discussed, or need a clearer list of questions before your next appointment.

Write down one sentence before comparing services: “The thing I need help understanding or arranging is…” This gives you something concrete to ask about. A broad promise of support is less useful than knowing what the service will deliver for that particular need.

What Total Health's review is designed to do

Total Health's published process describes organizing case information and evidence into an educational report. It covers treatment, testing, and potentially relevant trial considerations, with questions to discuss with the treating team. The report separates what may matter for the current decision from considerations that may become relevant later.

You can read about the process and view a fictional sample before deciding whether the format fits your needs. The sample illustrates a report; it is not evidence of a patient's outcome or advice for another person's care.

How does this compare with patient navigation?

The National Cancer Institute describes patient navigators as helping people move through the healthcare system and communicate with their providers. Some also help with appointments and financial or social support. That range of work is broader than explaining a report. Confirm the tasks a particular service covers rather than assuming a title tells you everything. NCI: Patient navigator

If you need transportation, help with bills, or coordination of outside appointments, ask your care team about available resources and ask any concierge service explicitly whether it handles those tasks.

Questions to ask before joining

  • What will I receive, and can I see an example?
  • Who prepares the work, and who checks it?
  • Will I have a conversation with someone, and what is that conversation for?
  • What information do you need from me?
  • What is the total fee, including any optional follow-up?
  • When does your turnaround estimate start?
  • What is outside the service's scope?

Keep the answers together so you can compare services on the same basis. You should be able to explain what you are buying without relying on a marketing label.

Does it replace my oncologist?

Total Health describes its service as educational decision support. Diagnosis and treatment decisions remain with your treating clinicians. A review should help you prepare for that relationship, not become a reason to change or delay care on your own. See the service terms.
